Where Were You When Obama Announced His Vice President…Was Senator Joe Biden?

August 22nd, 2008 by Max Gladwell · 7 Comments

We invite you to participate in Obama’s (not so) grand social-media experiment.

We can all remember where we were and what we were doing at the time of momentous events, whether they be triumphs or tragedies. It’s Friday, August 22nd, 2008, at 5:47pm PT. Obama will soon make history, once again, by announcing his Vice Presidential running mate directly to the People via email and text message. This thread is designed to capture that moment.

When it’s announced, we invite you to come here to leave a comment about where you were and what you were doing when you received the text message or email. Did you get it on your phone? Who were you with? What did you do? We’ll update this post with our own story.

As you can see, we’re going out on a limb by assuming that it’s Delaware Senator Joe Biden. We’ll update that, as well, in the event that we’re wrong.

Update: The New York Times reports that Obama has, in fact, chosen Biden as his running mate. “Word of Mr. Obama’s decision leaked out hours before his campaign was scheduled to inform supporters via text and e-mail messages, and hours after informing two other top contenders for the vice presidential nomination – Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana and Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia – that they had not been chosen.”

We were sitting on our couch, watching the Olympics, working on our laptops. Instead of SMS, we found out over Twitter from @engagejoe.

Alas, here is the Obama Vice President text message announcement:

I’m with you on the Joe Biden tip. He’s a good safe choice and similarly charismatic.

Ug yeah I was twittering away, as well. I have mixed emotions about his choice. But if it helps him, great.

Um, I was actually giving police officers an eyewitness report after a guy broke in my bedroom window about 15 minutes before. So I guarantee I will remember this night for a long time to come.

    You called it!

It was 6:30 a.m. and I was up with my toddler, who is an early waker. During the prior night’s night-night routine, my mobile had gotten wedged in the futon in his room.

When I reached down to grab it, I saw the text.

Exciting – I like Biden and he definitely will connect with many of the Hillary voters.

The nation will have to get used to his propensity for verbal gaffes. I guess Obama really meant it when he forgave Biden for his “clean” comment during the primaries.

Biden said what a lot of the older white voters are thinking anyway – this is what will help Obama.

Carville had a great commentary yesterday in the NYT about why Obama should pick Biden. Focused a lot on Biden as a straight talker and his life experiences, working class background. Interesting, because most people tend to think of Biden as a foreign policy wonk.

Very exciting – another great decision by Obama. Let’s hope he abandons the Social Security tax hike next (if he hasn’t already).
