GM Steps Out on Oil, Starts Going with Electric

July 23rd, 2008 by Max Gladwell · No Comments

Anticipating the infrastructure demands of electric vehicles, General Motors cozies up with utilities.

Last month, GM announced it was breaking up with Big Oil. It went down like this: “We’ve had this great relationship for many years. We think we will both be a lot happier and healthier if we see less of each other.”

Sources tell us that $4-per-gallon gasoline and a market cap GM hasn’t been seen since 1955 have made for irreconcilable differences.

As can be expected from an initial breakup, the estrangement was short lived. But that hasn’t stopped GM from playing the field.

“To prepare for the introduction of plug-in electric vehicles, General Motors (GM) has partnered with an organization representing 30 top electric utility companies throughout the U.S. and Canada, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The deal aims to create a smooth transition and ensure plug-in vehicles are used to their full potential after they hit the market.”

This could be the one GM has been waiting for. Is it true love or just a rebound?
