Whereas social media harnesses the wisdom of the crowd, this nightclub harnesses its kinetic energy.
A new eco nightclub is scheduled to open on July 10th in Britain that will be powered by renewable energy. Are they purchasing renewable energy certificates (RECs)? Hardly. According to the owner, 60% of the power needed to run the club will be generated by converting the pounding of clubbers’ feet into electricity.
The club is owned by property millionaire Andrew Charalambous. Mr Charalambous, the head of a new climate change organisation called Club4Climate, said he hoped to use clubbing to inspire young people to tackle global warming.
“This is a new way to draw in the young generation,” he said. “It’s a sexy and fresh approach as opposed to the way young people feel they are preached to by other more ‘grown-up’ charities. Our aim in opening the country’s first ecological club is to get as many people as possible involved in saving their world.
“There is no greater platform than clubbing to reach out to young people. Having an energy-generating dancefloor is a very exciting and interesting idea that we have been talking to people in Rotterdam about. Such a dancefloor could generate about 60 per cent of the building’s energy.”
This YouTube video shows how such a floor can work:
The club will also feature a recycled water system in the bathrooms, and if you can prove you arrived by foot, bicycle, or public transportation, they’ll waive the $20 cover charge.
Update: Thanks to Green Design Girl (@marielacampo) for a link to another video. She says this technology was bought from SustainableDanceClub Rotterdam, which opened in 2006.
