MSNBC will broadcast the Kokua Festival concert today. Jack Johnson and friends played the show on April 24th in celebration of Earth Day 2008 and to benefit the Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

According to the website, “The Kokua Booth Village was a buzz with people learning and sharing the latest ideas in how to be green. We are especially excited about the interest and participation our attendees and fans took in all our greening measures, especially with the Earthday Resolutions and Kokua Festival Passports.”

The list of green measures is long and provides a what’s what of how to produce sustainable concert events. There’s plenty to learn for our personal sustainability practices, as well. We list them below with appropriate links.

As we reported, Jack Johnson’s new All At Once community offers social networking for those interested in contributing to a number of charities. Jack matches donations up to $2,500. The site continues to add features, such as a video sharing section where Jack donates $1 per view to the associated charity. Our only suggestion is to make the embed code available so the videos can be posted and shared on any social network for better exposure. The Kokua Festival also has a MySpace page.

Jack Johnson and all parties involved in producing the Kokua Festival are committed to environmental sustainability. The goal is for the 2008 Festival to be a zero-waste, carbon-neutral event; therefore, the following actions are being taken to help reduce the environmental impact of the Kokua Festival:

Zero-Waste Stations –There will be zero-waste collection stations located throughout the festival grounds – at each station, recyclables, food waste and compostables will be separated by student volunteers from local school groups. Kamehameha Treehuggers, Punahou, and Kahuku’s environmental clubs will be monitoring the stations to ensure proper disposal of all waste. Recycling assistance provided by Reynolds Recycling.

Water Stations – Again in 2008, fans will be encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles to the Festival – bottles can be filled for free at the Menehune Water Company water station located in the Kokua Village. There will also be special edition Kokua Festival SIGG brand water bottles available for purchase inside the gates.

Eco-Friendly Concert Merchandise – Festival t-shirts are made from organic cotton, and Festival concert posters are printed on 100% post-consumer waste recycled New Leaf Paper. Re-usable Kokua Festival bags will also be sold, with two different styles offered: one made of jute courtesy of Presenting Partner Simple Shoes, and another made of recycled plastic bottles courtesy of 1 Bag At A Time. Fans are encouraged to use these reusable bags at their local grocery stores instead of paper or plastic. Graphic design and printing for Festival merchandise provided by Lively & Motch, King Graphics and Meridian Graphics.

Biodiesel – Production vehicles and generators used at the Kokua Festival will run on sustainable, locally produced biodiesel fuel courtesy of Pacific Biodiesel.

Kokua Village – While at the Kokua Festival, fans can visit the Kokua Village to purchase local food and beverage items; learn more about products and services from green companies such as Patagonia, Simple Shoes, and Stonyfield Farm; watch alternative energy demonstrations; and get information from environmentally active groups from around the islands.

Locally-Grown, Organic & Natural Concessions and Catering – A variety of locally-grown, organic and natural food and beverage items will be available for fans to purchase at the festival. Click here for a list of local food vendors. The festival catering crew is committed to providing the artists, crew, and VIP hospitality areas with local, organic, and natural products.

Sustainable Food Ware – Thanks to the cooperation of Centerplate, Ginniberries, and our local food vendors, the entire venue will be using sustainable food wares from Styrophobia. All cups, containers, serving dishes, utensils, and napkins will be biodegradable, recyclable, and/or re-usable.

Local Travel – We strongly encourage all attendees to utilize alternative methods of transportation to get to the Kokua Festival: biking, walking, utilizing public transportation, or driving a hybrid or biodiesel vehicle are all great ways to get to the show. The Kokua Festival has arranged for free parking at the Kapiolani Community College, along with free electric shuttles that will be running from 2pm to 11pm on both show days. Please carpool if you are driving to the show!

The Bike Valet – For those who choose to bike to the show, free bike parking and valet service will be provided at the front of the venue courtesy of the Hawaii Bicycling League. All fans who bike to the show will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a number of prizes, including bicycles donated by The Bike Factory and The Bike Shop (winners to be announced during the show.)

CO2 Offsets – New in 2008, the Kokua Festival will offer online ticket buyers the opportunity to offset the emissions generated by their travel to the show! An option will be available at ticket points of purchase to contribute an additional $2 toward carbon offsets that will help reduce the CO2 impact of fans’ travel. Evolution Sage, the Kokua Festival’s offset partner, will use the carbon credits that are purchased to fund renewable energy programs in Hawaii. If you are flying into Hawaii for the Kokua Festival, we encourage you to consider making your entire trip carbon-neutral via additional offsets; visit www.evolutionsage.com to learn more.

Climate-Neutral Certification – After all possible actions have been taken to reduce the environmental impact of the Kokua Festival, the remaining CO2 emissions will be calculated and offset via the purchase of additional carbon credits from Evolution Sage. Once this has been done, the entire Festival will be certified climate-neutral.

Earth Day Resolution – Fans are also encouraged to pledge to reduce their own environmental impact leading up to the Kokua Festival and throughout the year. Please check the Festival website for updates on how to pledge your resolution for 2008! To check out the Earth Day Resolution videos, click here
